Container Sizes: From 20 Feet to 40 Feet [2021 Update]

Understanding container sizes for export purposes is essential if you intend to use them for storage—or even as creative housing.
The wide variety of container types and sizes helps you choose the right one for your needs.

Export containers are known to be multifunctional and applicable to various uses. Much of the transportation infrastructure is designed with this in mind, along with the compatibility of the containers themselves.

These two aspects are likely what have made export containers so popular from the start. Understanding the common container variants builds your foundational knowledge of container types.

20-Foot Container

The 20-foot container is one of the most popular due to its lightweight and ease of maneuverability.
Some people even convert them into small cabins as part of larger buildings.

However, 20-foot containers are often more expensive per square foot than 40-foot ones. For the same total space, you’d need twice as many 20-foot units—so unless your design demands it, 40-foot containers are generally a more efficient choice.

  • External Dimensions: 19'10" L x 8' W x 8'6" H (6.05 m x 2.44 m x 2.59 m)

  • Internal Dimensions: 19'4" L x 7'8" W x 7'10" H (5.90 m x 2.35 m x 2.39 m)

  • Door Opening: 7'8" W x 7'6" H (2.34 m x 2.29 m)

  • Weight: 4,960 lbs tare; 62,240 lbs max load (2,250 kg tare; 28,230 kg max)

20-Foot High Cube Container

Similar to the standard 20-foot, but with 12 extra inches in height, allowing for interior insulation and lighting while maintaining standard ceiling height. This added height often makes the interior feel significantly more spacious.

  • External Dimensions: 19'10" L x 8' W x 9'6" H (6.05 m x 2.44 m x 2.89 m)

  • Internal Dimensions: 19'4" L x 7'8" W x 8'10" H (5.90 m x 2.35 m x 2.70 m)

  • Door Opening: 7'8" W x 8'6" H (2.34 m x 2.59 m)

  • Weight: 5,070 lbs tare; 62,130 lbs max load (2,300 kg tare; 28,180 kg max)

20-Foot Refrigerated Container (Reefer)

Also known as a reefer, this is a 20-foot container with built-in insulation. Ideal for storing temperature-sensitive goods or for converting into well-insulated living spaces.

  • External Dimensions: 19'10" L x 8' W x 8'6" H (6.05 m x 2.44 m x 2.59 m)

  • Internal Dimensions: 17'10" L x 7'6" W x 7'5" H (5.44 m x 2.28 m x 2.26 m)

  • Door Opening: 7'6" W x 7'5" H (2.28 m x 2.26 m)

  • Weight: 6,400 lbs tare; 60,800 lbs max load (2,905 kg tare; 27,575 kg max)

40-Foot Container

The most common container size—large enough for partitioning into rooms or combining to form larger homes.
Like the 20-foot, the standard ceiling height can limit options for insulation unless using high cubes.

  • External Dimensions: 40' L x 8' W x 8'6" H (12.19 m x 2.44 m x 2.59 m)

  • Internal Dimensions: 39'6" L x 7'8" W x 7'10" H (12.04 m x 2.35 m x 2.39 m)

  • Door Opening: 7'8" W x 7'6" H (2.34 m x 2.29 m)

  • Weight: 8,333 lbs tare; 58,863 lbs max load (3,780 kg tare; 27,600 kg max)

40-Foot High Cube Container

Like the 40-foot standard, but with an extra foot of height—ideal for insulation, electrical, or overhead storage.
That added foot might seem small, but in container living, it makes a big difference.

  • External Dimensions: 40' L x 8' W x 9'6" H (12.19 m x 2.44 m x 2.89 m)

  • Internal Dimensions: 39'6" L x 7'8" W x 8'10" H (12.04 m x 2.35 m x 2.70 m)

  • Door Opening: 7'8" W x 8'6" H (2.34 m x 2.59 m)

  • Weight: 8,750 lbs tare; 58,450 lbs max load (3,968 kg tare; 26,512 kg max)

These are some of the most common container types based on size—from 20 feet to 40 feet.
